Our Story
YarnGi / ˈjɑːrn ˈgiː/
Yarn / jɑːrn/ noun — the thread that remembers: a symbol of traditional craftsmanship, and the beginning of all connections.
Gi / giː/ noun — a {gift}, both in name and nature, drawn from Yunnan’s cultural heritage: quiet, enduring, and woven with ancestral meaning. It carries the spirit of giving, the flow of memory, and the soft resonance of a living tradition.
Together, YarnGi is a soft conversation between heritage and imagination — a brand born from roots, carried gently into new soil.
Our Beginning
We are Amber and Lulu — two designers born and raised in Yunnan, a place unlike any other. Yunnan is where we first learned to see: not just with our eyes, but with our hands, our breath, and our hearts. It’s a land of misty hills, embroidered skies, and stories whispered in woven threads. The colors, textures, and traditions of our hometown never left us — they live in everything we create.
Years later, life brought us to New York, where the pace was fast but the creative spirit was bold. In that city of edges and ambition, we carried the softness of Yunnan with us — a grounding force, a way of seeing beauty differently. It was in Los Angeles that YarnGi began to bloom. The golden light, the mountain silhouettes, the layered cultures — it felt familiar, like an echo of home. Here, the rhythm of the West coast met the soul of our childhood, and a new vision started to take shape.
Why We Create
YarnGi is our way of honoring where we come from while shaping where we’re going. We design with care — not to replicate tradition, but to translate it into something that feels alive today. Every piece holds a quiet story: of hands that weave, of hills that breathe, of a culture that gives without shouting. This isn’t about nostalgia. It’s about presence — about making space for softness, for memory, for meaning in the textures of everyday life.
We don’t want to be a symbol. We want to be a feeling.
A breath of mountain air. A thread that holds. A gift shared.
Crafting Roots with Threads
At YarnGi, we believe that culture is not static — it flows. It is carried in the threads of a pillow, the weight of a weave, the silence between stitches.
Our work is an invitation:
To feel.
To remember.
To belong — quietly, deeply, beautifully.
